FESS, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

How It Works

01

Endoscopic Evaluation

An endoscope and imaging confirm which sinuses are affected and how the natural drainage pathways are blocked.

02

Anesthesia

Performed under general anesthesia, entirely through the nostrils with no external incisions.

03

Clearing & Widening

Diseased tissue or polyps are removed and the natural drainage pathways are widened using fine endoscopic instruments.

04

Post-operative Care

Nasal rinses and follow-up visits support healing and help keep the sinuses clear afterward.

Good candidates

  • Chronic or recurrent sinusitis that hasn't improved with antibiotics or nasal sprays
  • Nasal polyps causing persistent blockage
  • Imaging confirms sinus disease as the source of symptoms

Discuss alternatives if

  • Symptoms haven't yet been given a full trial of medical therapy
  • There is an active, untreated infection
  • Symptoms are more consistent with allergies alone than structural sinus disease

Preparing for Your Procedure

Blood thinners are reviewed and paused if directed
Any active infection is treated beforehand where possible
Nasal sprays or rinses may be started in advance, as directed

Recovery

First week

Congestion and facial pressure feel similar to a sinus infection while the tissue heals.

1–2 weeks

Strenuous activity is avoided; most people return to normal routines by the end of this period.

Following weeks

Congestion and mild discomfort continue to ease as the sinuses fully settle.

Risks & Important Considerations

FESS is generally well tolerated, with the most common risks being bleeding, infection, and temporary changes to smell or taste. Rare but serious risks — such as injury to nearby structures — are discussed as part of informed consent, along with how uncommon they are in practice.
